Secrets of successful websites

Page content

Unless you’re a copywriter you’re not a copywriter so don’t attempt it.

Too many think they can write English and that writing some copy for a web page is a doddle. It isn’t.

Even those confident with their ability to spell, punctuate and follow the rules of grammar do not qualify. Writing compelling copy is part flair and part training. Only if you have the training should you attempt it.

After that you need to know how to write for the web.

  • Pages need to be constructed so that they follow the "rules" of how site visitors read screens
  • Keywords need to be included in the appropriate places and to avoid keyword "stuffing" – a practice Google puts fairly high on its hit list
  • Google has recently embraced the use of synonyms in its algorithm
The last point emphasises that, above all, content should be readable.  A page written purely to please Google is likely to make poor reading and there is evidence that Google’s algorithm now measures readability while marking a page.
