Secrets of successful websites

Structure

This subject can be over-complicated because sites need to be simple and over-complication usually follows when the preparation work hasn’t been done thoroughly.
Sites need a simple structure or:
  • You’ll lose your visitor’s interest (he came for information not to solve logistics problems) and he’ll promptly go elsewhere
  • You’ll make life difficult for Google and you may be indexed in a way you didn’t intend and/or your rankings may suffer
Many think that the site structure is too simple to draw out – it’s clearly in your head because it’s so easy.  However, what’s in your head isn’t necessarily in the heads of everyone else involved and what seems so simple can quickly unravel when inter-page relationships are considered and the page you thought was a Tier 2 page should actually be a Tier 1.

So do the leg-work and do it before anything else:

Obviously the layout can be adjusted to suit but simplicity is what you’re after.  Research shows that the maximum number of pages below a page should be seven and the maximum number of tiers should be four (including the Home page).  This puts an obvious constraint on the size of a site (344 pages including the Home page) so other techniques should be employed for larger sites or where more sub-pages are required for a page.
